Something Strange

I never tire of this.

From an ancient homily on Holy Saturday-

Something strange is happening—there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear.

He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: “My Lord be with you all.” Christ answered him: “And with your spirit.” He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: “Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. Out of love for you and for your descendants I now by my own authority command all who are held in bondage to come forth, all who are in darkness to be enlightened, all who are sleeping to arise. I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be held a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead. Rise up, work of my hands, you who were created in my image. Rise, let us leave this place, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and we cannot be separated.

For your sake I, your God, became your son; I, the Lord, took the form of a slave; I, whose home is above the heavens, descended to the earth and beneath the earth. For your sake, for the sake of man, I became like a man without help, free among the dead. For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was crucified in a garden.

See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore to you the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands, nailed firmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree.

I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you.

Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly paradise. I will not restore you to that paradise, but I will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you. I appointed cherubim to guard you as slaves are guarded, but now I make them worship you as God. The throne formed by cherubim awaits you, its bearers swift and eager. The bridal chamber is adorned, the banquet is ready, the eternal dwelling places are prepared, the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The kingdom of heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity.

39 weeks and feeling fine!

Hello sweet friends. In case anyone wanted an update, I am 39 weeks plus 2 days today (that is, my due date is next Tuesday), and I am feeling fine! Really fine! I have been blessed with an incredible third trimester. Praise God!

While we are definitely looking forward to meeting our sweet baby, we want to give her all the time she needs to be ready to enter the world. So, since everyone keeps asking (very kindly, I might note) if we're ready... for now, we are enjoying this time, this pregnancy, the regular flow of our lives, and will be glad to welcome her whenever she makes her appearance.

For now, here are a few updated shots of her nursery:

Owl wreath Chad crocheted-

Swaddling blankets-

Stand with diapers, wipes, washcloths, and puzzles from Grandma Savrda (for the future)-

Changing table with blankets and stuffed animals-

Probably less than 50% of the clothes she has (yikes!)-

Sweet little monogram backpack from one of Grandma Savrda's work friends-

Bed with quilt from Grandma Tami, pillow from Alysha, and pillow from Rose-

Above the crib (with bunting Chad crocheted)-

View from corner-to-corner-

View from the door-

Rocking chair with sweet quilt from Grandma Tami-

 Another shot of the crib-

Wall above the changing table-

Stuffed animals and blankets again-

Corner above rocking chair (with images of the Holy Family and Judith Marie's namesake, Judith, after she has beheaded Holofernes) -

A picture of the beautiful babe herself-

A diaper tricycle from Grandpa Cunningham's wife Pam-

So as you can see, we're pretty set and looking forward to meeting her when she comes!

Crib

I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I have the greatest husband in the world. Many months back, shortly after we found out we were pregnant, he said he would like to make a crib for the baby. I said no. Safety, blah blah something blah blah. Ultimately he assured me that he would take all the necessary precautions to make the crib up to all the current safety standards, and so I agreed. Now, this wasn't his first woodworking project, but it certainly was his most intense (and important) one. This thing required a lot of planning. Here it is in its beginning stages:

I believe at this point I said something like, "I don't want it to look too much like a fence." Reason #100,000 why I shouldn't look at (or at least comment on my husband's unfinished projects). Either way, he brushed off my silly comments and made a beautiful crib that I cannot wait to lay my children in.

I can say, I did contribute more than just silly comments. Here we are after I helped by taping some boards! Haha! It was a really cold day.

I am not sure how my sweet husband didn't freeze while working on the crib.

Here it is as he was putting it together in the baby's room.

He etched a beautiful prayer around the top rail. Here is the beginning:

Here is the same section, only after it was finished with tung oil. I love the variations in the wood color, and I love being able to see Chad's "handwriting" carved into the wood.

Here it is pre- mattress support, mattress and bedding. I am thrilled with the way it all turned out.

And here is the final product (with a trial run of the bedding, which requires some tweaking). I couldn't be happier. It turned out beautifully, and I am so proud to have something made by my husband's loving hands rather than something bought at a store. Thanks be to God that my husband is sweet enough to listen to my worries, but loving enough to convince me that sometimes I just need to quit worrying and simply trust. What a beautiful outcome!

Sweet One

Here's our little sweet one (about ten weeks ago):
Now about 27 weeks, she has been growing big and fat since then and makes it fun maneuvering crowded delivery rooms with my new job in the newborn nursery. She loves greeting the fresh deliveries with plenty of kicks and waves. She's a very friendly baby.

Pray for us. Gestational diabetes test tomorrow morning.

Big Birthday

We recently celebrated Chad Michael's 30th birthday. We had delicious spaghetti and homemade meatballs and German chocolate cake for dessert. Yum. This year Chad was sweet enough to help my mother and I with the 3+ hour-long cake endeavor. It made stressing over the cake a lot less stressful and the whole experience a lot more fun. And let's face it, he is a much better baker than I.

Unfortunately, I only managed to capture a couple lame pics on my iPhone. I hope that when its not just Chad and I we can be better about using that awesome camera I have. At any rate, I am glad I did capture two shots to help remember the day.

Ready to chow down after all his hard work
